This is an engaging read and a detailed look into a significant era in English, American, and Native American history. Harris' research into the raging religious/political battle of a power struggle in England in the late 1600 provides a view into the bitterness of an ongoing war where taking revenge on political operatives knew no bounds of geography. Journalist Hamilton Nolan highlights current leaders in the labor movement detailing the strengths and struggles of people leading large unions and forming new ones. His interviews with labor leaders detail the personal and organizing challenges faced by individuals and organizations. A labor organizer and union member himself, Nolan has the bona fides to praise and criticize the current state of the movement. His observations are informative and fair. As the labor movement is not well covered in the mainstream press, Nolan's book is a much needed encapsulation of the issues facing workers and the efforts of workers looking to create and advance unions. He also effectively details why strong unions will continue to be a necessary part of the quality of life equation for most Americans. The third chapter discussing the organizing efforts in California by SEIU and AFSCME to create the Child Care Providers United Union is important documentation of the 20 years of work for child care providers to be legally recognized as having the right to negotiate as a group.Journalist Hamilton Nolan highlights current leaders in the labor movement detailing the strengths and struggles of people leading large unions and forming new ones. This is a really nice resource for ideas to help build community. The book is very thoughtful in its approach, offering strategies to meet new neighbors, help young families, and make members of a committee feel appreciated. The recipes have clear instructions and offer a variety of foods to suit many tastes. This book came out in 2011 and still holds up, although an up to date edition including information about reusable containers and the etiquette of "first contact" of how to introduce yourself to new people would also be welcome. Overall, this is a nice community resource that demystifies the process of getting to know your neighbors by showing them appreciation with a thoughtful, timely gift. This is a really nice resource for ideas to help build community. I enjoyed this book so much. I listened to the audio version performed by Ann Marie Gideon who did an incredible job providing voices for so many characters. The writing and plot are so elegant and perfectly crafted that I have no way to fairly describe it other than to see read/listen to this title right away! As with any story set in/about a bookshop, a bibliophile is going to be prepared to pounce on any bookish detail that doesn't set right. Not to worry, Meyerson's book and bookstore knowledge is accurate and wide ranging. You will want to know how to ends, but you won't want it to end!I enjoyed this book so much.
