Hedy Lamarr, an elegant well-known actress, is a pioneer in the field of wireless communications. During the Second World War, Lamarr together with George Anthiel, a composer, invented a “secret communications system” so that Allied torpedoes couldn’t be detected by the Nazis.
The system manipulated radio frequencies at irregular intervals with both transmitter and receiver hopping to new frequencies together. This invention is the basis for spread spectrum technology. Today she is considered the “mother of WiFi” as this technology is the foundation for today’s Wifi, GPS and Bluetooth communications systems.
