To say I was skeptical of this book is putting it lightly. A book written in verse....? Ugh.
And I got it and said well at least it's really short (80 pages) and the covers pretty darn cool okay I'll give it a shot. So I start reading of this girl whose parents divorce and she moves to a new school and has problems with her habit of daydreaming. And I'm intraced by her voice. Beautifully rhythmic and illustrative rich in her words.
I'll give you a sample.....:
Explain this please
Mom names me for a
Creature with wings then wonders
what makes my thoughts fly
Students should be captivated by her simple, easy, yet thought provoking way she describes things in a poetic form. Plus I love the way that the teacher worked with her to stimulate her creativity and still help her keep on task. Her relationship with her mom is both realistic and tender. A sweet short read that makes you think. Good job Nikki Grimes!
