In his "Baloney Detection Checklist" the late Carl Sagan warned about people who argue from authority. Roger Ebert argued from authority (my reviews are always unquestionably accurate because I'm a famous film critic) and sometimes his reviews resembled the mood swings of a bipolar disorder sufferer. He gave four stars to some of the most unwatchable dreck (e.g. V. I. Warshawsky) yet he would trash movies that obviously had merit (e.g. Full Metal Jacket). What I particularly disliked were the favorable reviews that later appeared in some of Ebert's books - reviews of films that I distinctly recall him panning at the time of their original release. Certainly the man is entitled to change his mind, but a more honest critic would have drawn the readers attention to the disparity and offered some explanation as to why the film later grew on him.
