Two important things, here: 1. This is NOT a jaws re-run or sequel. 2. Blake Lively. Blake's had a terrific career, thus far, and this survival thriller's a departure of sorts, from her supporting roles in crime dramas (The Town, Savages) to her first break-out starring role, in the 2015, box-office winner, The Age of Adeline. Her performance--and the clever premise--made that movie a hit. So...why this one, when the title might also speak for the plot? Ans: Another starring role. Even better: the only competition for our attention is a shark. She OWNS this one, dominating the movie the same way that Tom Hanks dominated "Cast Away" and Robert Redford dominated "All Is Lost": they are isolated by circumstances and must, somehow, survive. Another bravura performance, here. Now, the plot: Illogical? Sure. But given the beautiful setting, stunning visual effects and Lively's performance under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra, who's been responsible for the recent series of Liam Neeson thrillers--suspending disbelief is easy. Will the injured surfer threatened by a massive killer shark survive her ordeal? How CAN she? Grab the popcorn.
