How to Make a Spaceship

a Band of Renegades, An Epic Race, and the Birth of Private Space Flight

This book, an ambitious attempt to chronicle suborbital space flight by private industry rather than NASA, falls a bit short. What came to mind were "The Right Stuff" and "This New Ocean: The Story of the First Space Age"--it is closer to the brilliant but ego-driven players in The Right Stuff as opposed to the more scholarly, balanced This New Ocean. Still, if you like space adventure and hope for human flight to become an actual option, here's the current scoop of how it was spearheaded by a dreamy young man and kept alive through financial privation and dangerous test flights. Well-heeled Allen, Bezos, and Musk make appearances.
