This is a book that developers, planners, and residents of Silicon Valley should read. As our region struggles with the mix of transportation changes, housing demand, and increased density of businesses and homes it is time to think seriously and in concert about how our choices can support walkable, engaging communities or consign us to concrete silos that don't promote interaction. Jacobs takes a global approach describes the features of cities around the world from Beijing to Zurich. He focuses on details ranging from trees to windows, benches to streetlights. Throughout the text, Jacobs focuses on the elements that promote social engagement and how urban design can support or prevent this crucial aspect of city life.
