So, I know I'm going to get a good read whenever I read Susan Elizabeth Phillips as I've been reading her since the mid-1990s. We know it will all work out in the end. Emotionally stunted people will grow and help others to grow. She will always get a 3 or higher star rating from me. Usually there isn’t any true “suspense” or “action” but just a solid story about character development. That being said: I had several problems with this book: 1. SEP never explained the origins of the nickname of the hero. 2. Heroine suffered badly from “damsel in distress” for far too long. She is supposedly such a smart cookie – did guilt and wedding planning warp her brain? 3. Everyone was just too good to be true. Of course that is part of the charm of a romance but there has to be a baseline reality check for the characters to bounce out around. Sadly, for these characters the reality baseline swerved wildly and constantly. I’m thinking part of the problem is the ick factor of the runaway bride leaving (with no real reason defined ) and hooking up with a “bad boy”. The secondary story of the TV celebrities was completely unnecessary. I feel it was put in only to develop a major LBGT character. I enjoy promoting civil rights in art…but I truly feel the publishing contract now include a clause that say a LBGT character must be included, even if the character doesn’t moves the plot along.
