Firstly, I just want to say that after watching the Swedish trilogy on DVD (English subtitled), I was able to appreciate the book much more. Granted, the first chapter was a bit stale for me and that it still took time to learn the names and orient myself, it did not take long to get fully immersed. I find that listening to a complex novel such as this is easier than reading it as reading for me generally puts me to sleep rather quickly, and I lose interest. The reader, Simon Vance does a good job at his male voices, particularly the older ones like that old Vanger dude. On that note, I really wished that they had some voice actors for this one since it can be somewhat tricky differentiating the characters (I have not read the novel, only listened), and Simon can't do female voices. Furthermore, I am not that familiar with spoken-word books such as these so the whole abridged and unabridged thing is alien to me. Overall, I would say that despite these shortcomings, I was enthralled and found the story to be intelligently written from a brilliant "late" author who I am sad not to see any more work from. RIP Stieg Larsson.
