Directed by George Cukor in 1940 based on the 1939 Broadway play of the same name by Philip Barry, this American dramedy delves into the situation in which a wealthy snobbish woman expects a wedding when her ex-husband and a tabloid magazine journalist arrive. This woman reflects on Helen Hope Montgomery Scott (1904–1995), a Philadelphia socialite known for her hijinks, who married a friend of playwright Philip Barry. Although it's interesting to know the zeitgeist at the time, the performances of the major actors seem overacting and the story appears ill-contrived. Supposedly a fast-talking screwball comedy, however, it looks like a movie with a touch of snobbish high-society elegance. I just don't like it!
