In the beginning and eleven years ago, two immortal beings decide that it might not be time to start an Apocalypse. Having followed the wrong boy for years, Aziraphale and Crowley must now try to locate the whereabouts of the real Antichrist. Perhaps the story of Agnes Nutter and her famous prophecies will hold the answer?

Opinion

From Library Staff

"Good Omens is one of my favorite novels and I was extremely suspicious of an attempt to translate such a colorful novel into a mini-series. I am delighted by this fantastic adaptation that takes the source material and makes it sing on screen." Camden, Librarian

Faithful to the book's fun but heartfelt tone! Entertaining watch whether you have or have not read the book. Had me laughing a lot :)

I enjoyed this. It is British humor and storytelling - so if you know you generally don't like that, you will likely not love this. It also has a little bit of cheap/low-budget effects in some scenarios, which can be distracting. But overall, the characters and story are well developed and well acted. The story is well paced for the television format. What if God and Satan scheduled Armageddon but a key angel and demon on earth decided they liked life on earth too much to want it to be destroyed? A delightful premise and Sheen and Tennant are excellent leads.

This one goes on my top 10 list! Michael Sheen and David Tennant are just fabulous-what a pair! The acting is great and the writing is super-smart! It helps if you are pretty familiar with the Bible, Nostradamus, and general history as there are a lot of subtle jokes you will miss if you aren’t. But even if you aren’t, this miniseries is still very fun to watch! The only reason I didn’t give it a full 5 stars is because I thought the kids got a little “preachy” at times.

You've heard it often said that the book was better than the movie. This is no exception. In fact, of the 4 adaptations I've seen of Pratchett's works, none of them faired well at all. Mr. Pratchett needs to be read, not seen. This is the LONGEST converted piece of T.P.'s and so it is the most grueling to get through to the end when the outcome is known from the first reference of the end times and Armageddon. And what a fine cast too ... Michael Sheen, David Tennant, Michael McKean, Derek Jacobi, Miranda Richardson and Brian Cox but they can't muster a funny line or breathe life into their roles to save ... well their lives. The plot is full of holes, the opportunity for humor is totally wasted and what little T.P. had to offer for character development and comedic situations is spread out over two dozen characters. We are not amused.

.
It was a chore to get through this whole thing. Each episode is less funny and more childish than the last.

I'm so glad this is coming to DVD so more people have a chance to experience the droll delight of this story. The casting is perfect, the adaptation spot-on (no surprise since co-author Neil Gaiman was the showrunner), and the quirky tone delightful. This is one I'll be buying for my own home collection.

This is a great example where casting essentially ensures success. David Tennant and Michael Sheen as Crowley and Aziraphale, respectively, are absolutely on fire here. They sizzle. It's been a while since I've read the book, but I feel like the show gets deeper into the star-crossed friendship of the angel and demon, and it's just tremendous stuff. A film adaptation of Good Omens has been in development hell forever, and we're lucky it wound up on TV instead where it had a chance to really spread its wings. Apologies for all of the heaven/hell puns, I couldn't hell-p myself.
