As I started to read "Know My Name," I felt myself reaching out and scooping up Chanel to hold her close so she would not feel so lost and alone. Each time I put the book down, reluctantly, to be sure, I "told" Chanel I'd be right back and she should not feel I was abandoning her. Her writing is powerful. Her strength in the face of great adversity is remarkable--and I hope she now recognizes this in herself.
"Know My Name" should be required reading in every police department's training program, it should be required reading in every law school, it should be in every high school and college library, and it should be gifted to every high school graduate heading off to university or work--boys as well as girls as there is much to teach both. At the very least, read her victim's impact statement:

The news story: Unconscious young woman being raped behind a dumpster...
After seeing reporting on the news with dis-belief, and then hearing portions of Emily Doe's victim statement, and then reading her statement in it's entirety, I had to read this book!

Actually I went and bought the book, because I want to contribute to Chanel's healing, financial recovery, and to help her buy the freedom to pursue her dreams after this nightmare that has consumed her life for years!

She just wanted to write and illustrate childrens books, that is all she wanted in her dreams. But with this memoir has given us an extraordinarily lucid, and thoughtful, and personal account of how her happy life was upended and destroyed by her rape, and then OUR justice system that re-victimized her.

This book should be required reading for all teens and parents! It is so important for young women to understand how they must be aware and protect themselves - a sad reality. And it is so important for young men to treat women with respect instead of perpetuating misogynistic behaviors!

The heroes in this book are the two young men who stopped the rape, and then the people within the system that treated Chanel with compassion. This book provides the path for our justice system to be reformed to protect victims, not perpetrators! This book will save lives!

I find it hard to put into words what I felt while I was reading Chanel's book and when I finished. Her writing takes you with her into her heart-renching rape and it's aftermath. She makes you feel everything she felt, all the pain, the anger, the injustice. Beyond the difficult topic, Chanel is also a beautiful and powerful writer.
