GOOD 1957 musical film with Frank Sinatra as "Pal" Joey Evans.
It did strike me that this is much more a modern (1957) film drama - with musical elements - than a staged musical which was filmed - like Coney Island (1943) which I saw last night.
Both Hayworth and Kim Novak's songs are dubbed over. Definitely a dramatic movie, not a stage show, but there are several good Rodgers and Hart songs, and overall, it was worth a watch.
Oh, the Rita Hayworth character is annoyingly smoking cigarettes constantly - guess that's a late 50's thing. I do like how the contemporary Hindi Bollywood movies I watch often have strong anti-cigarette smoking messages ('Smoking can kill you!') before the movie - kind of like how Hollywood home DVD movies often have 'copying is illegal' blurbs.

Dated, but mostly charming musical with songs by Rodgers and Hart, including "My Funny Valentine," "I Could Write a Book," and "The Lady is a Tramp." Sinatra is the title character and he seems to be playing Frank Sinatra: a roguish, but good natured womanizing singer. He calls most women "dames." Ah, 50s sexism. He's torn between fellow nightclub performer Kim Novak and wealthy widow Rita Hayworth. What a dilemma! Sinatra and Novak also starred together in the far grittier "The Man with the Golden Arm." John O'Hara wrote the book for the original musical and director George Sidney also did "Viva Las Vegas" and "Bye Bye Birdie." There's some lovely shots of a bygone San Francisco.
