Donna Leon fans: this one is a masterpiece if you compare her subtle Venetian musings to themes in Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. Petty crime and government corruption are stray sidebars but are they? The clue is Detective Brunetti starts reading Sophocles' Antigone. The unraveling of a father's midnight death reveals this beautifully composed mystery novel is a meditation on crime vs evil, the law & punishments vs justice and forgiveness. 5 *****.
