A United Airlines DC-3 plunged into San Francisco Bay on February 9, 1937. For more than a month the cause of the tragedy that killed 11 people remained a mystery. Then an American Airlines DC-3 experienced a problem that aviation experts linked to the DC-3 mystery in the Bay area. This finding was confirmed by a pilot who had flown with Admiral Byrd during the Antarctic expedition,. The DC-3 was crumpled and almost unrecognizable when it was lifted by a salvage barge from the water of San Francisco Bay. Among those killed on the United flight was macaroni millionaire Mark Fontana who had tried vainly to swim to safety. --Provided by publisher.
