This is a good, late career film by Paul Verhoeven and a knockout , hilarious performance by Isabelle Huppert- which is odd considering the disturbing material in the film.
It's a testament to Verhoeven's stellar abilities as a filmmaker that so many people are seriously upset by this film- it just proves he's done a great job.

A brilliant, relentless film about sexuality and power. In my all-time top 5.

This is not a funny film, in my opinion. There is explicit sexual scenes, where the person being raped, doesn't have any reason to go to the police! I cannot realize the same reaction that this woman has in this situation. The only reason might be because she is equally as ill as her perpetrator. Anyway, I do not recommend this film to anyone. No children should watch this. I do not know the point of this story.

This is billed as a story of a courageous woman getting even with a rapist. It's anything but: she's just as pathological as the rapist! She plays a sick game with the guy and then she decides to call it quits. No, this is not a spoiler! It's how she calls it quits! I'm not revealing that.

Basically, don't bother.

How this movie got 2 golden globes and critics picks from LA and NY Times is beyond me. It's just plain stupid, with no one acting in a manner that has any rational basis given what is occurring. I'm not bothered by the subject matter, as one should be prepared when watching a Verhoeven flick, but I am bothered by an inane story. Huppert is a talent, but she can't save this film, and by her standards, she phoned it in - likely because she knew it was stupid.

An incredibly perverse story. The main character invites an unknown, masked rapist to brutally attack her, again and again. Strangely, she never shows any ill effects after these encounters - no bruising, split lips, black eyes, concussion, etc - even though she is violently beaten each time. Even weirder is the interview of the main actress (in "extras") where she says the work is a triumph because it accurately captures how people really are....what kind of world does she inhabit?!

A troubling and hilarious film by Paul Verhoeven- obviously this is not a film for everyone.

" You’ve never seen a rape-revenge fantasy quite like “Elle,” not least because the rape, revenge and fantasy components of that subgenre have never been quite so fascinatingly disarranged. Knowingly incendiary but remarkably cool-headed, and built around yet another of Isabelle Huppert’s staggering psychological dissections, Paul Verhoeven’s long-awaited return to notional genre filmmaking pulls off a breathtaking bait-and-switch: Audiences arriving for a lurid slab of arthouse exploitation will be taken off-guard by the complex, compassionate, often corrosively funny examination of unconventional desires that awaits them. "- Guy Lodge.

Horrible. All the characters are perverse and evil.

Interesting, provocative, disturbing. Many actresses likely shunned the role because it does play to men's fantasies and misconceptions about women and rape. The claim that the film is about female empowerment is as unconvincing as the protagonist is in the position of head of a video game company. Also, let's not forget that the novelist, the screen writer, the director, and the producer are all men. Meanwhile, the director let's himself off the hook by suggesting that he doesn't know what the film is, and that it may be a complete fantasy. Having said all that, I rated the film highly because it is provocative and generally well made despite some distracting inconsistencies -- For example, why does the baby change colour? Overall, the film is a fine example of male perspective and male storytelling :) Finally, a few weeks later, it was interesting to watch the lead actress, Isabelle Huppert, in Heaven's Gate, in another role when she was much younger. Note that she was interviewed in 2017 by Charlie Rose, who seemed quite enamored by her -- just sayin'.
