During the bloodiest battle of WWII, in Okinawa, Desmond Doss saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he singlehandedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector to ever earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The true story of WWII conscientious objector, Desmond Doss. He has a passion to serve his country as a medic. During basic training he takes the abuse of his fellow recruits but his resolve to serve remains. The battle for Iwo Jima was one of the hardest and bloodiest battles in the Pacific. Many US soldiers died and many were wounded during the battle. Doss was on top of the mountain and despite being alone and an overwhelming Japanese force, he rescued, treated and lowered many soldiers off the mountain by himself for hours. Facing exhaustion, he still carried on until the Japanese was mere feet away from him and his sergeant.

He earned the respect of his fellow soldiers and officers. His determination and bravery to save as many soldiers as possible was well told. The horrors of Iwo Jima was shown enough to tell Doss' story but not overwhelm and take over the movie.

Director Mel Gibson’s biopic starts out sincerely enough with an Oscar-nominated performance from Andrew Garfield in the lead and a supporting cast of British and Australians giving passable American accents. But being a MEL GIBSON!! film it isn’t long before the hubris and overkill set in giving rise to some very uncomfortable contradictions. By all official accounts Doss was a pacifist who strove to heal rather than maim; Gibson takes an orgiastic delight in meticulously staged battle sequences brimming with severed limbs and puddles of guts. Doss was a modest man who held to his personal beliefs without proselytizing; Gibson treads into religious infomercial territory with Garfield’s performance hovering somewhere between saint and saviour—cast as typical army brass bullies Vince Vaughn and and Sam Worthington play Caiaphas and Pilate to Garfield’s Christ, the evil Japanese become hellish demons, and one embarrassing scene of a stretcher being lowered against a sky ripped apart by heavenly sunbeams only needed a white dove and an angel or two to be complete. There's no doubting Desmond T. Doss' heroism, but in Mel Gibson’s hands his memory becomes a bombastic salute to the director’s own ego. At least we’re treated to archival footage of the man himself as the final credits roll.

Great movie. Very similar to Saving Private Ryan in terms of the war action.

I was skeptical loaning this one; but the World War films are pretty supportive of the young soldiers w/ compassion of the Lone wolf. Ends up the one that refused to draw arms is the one that literally ' hall the ass of those that look down on him as a coward'. Real life characters w/documentary footage at the end.
This was on the Okinawan Island in Japan...the residence are supposely not Japanese but the island was taken over to fight against the White American soldiers. It is a burrow of tunnels...heard they still exist. But Now Okinawa is not popular about the past war but the Long life of the Okinawan diet. You think with all the left over war debri ...toxic to the land they live on?

This is a Mel gibson production....never thought much of the actor...but this film brings a bit more in respecting his work.

The underDog is worth viewing to those unarmed medical heros.

I am NOT one to watch war movies,, but this was very well done. There is only about 25 minutes of violence in a film over 2 hours in length. The story line is really good and such a pleasant surprise. Great acting, directing and it is based on a true story.

Violence: prolonged realistically graphic sequences of war violence including grisly bloody images

Other: The whole issue of war is violent, and so that is why I think it is suitable for over 18 to watch.

Violence: Extreme violence (war sequences) about 1 hour into the movie. Before that, there is some domestic violence and some beating up.

Violence: Gruesome, realistic depictions of battle, death, and Japanese harikari (suicide as an honorable act). Also emotional and physical abuse/beatings of the conscientious objector.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: In addition to a ton of nasty war violence, there is a scene early on of a man's leg graphically injured in an accident. A young man's parents fight; one holds a gun and seems to contemplate turning it on himself. Boys brawl and one is hit with a brick.

Sexual Content: A soldier's naked rear is visible as he lounges in the barracks before being forced to run the obstacle course. Bunkmates rib him about his anatomy. Another man is reading a magazine with a drawing of a topless woman. A married couple kisses passionately.

Violence: Here's where the movie gets the R. I saw it in theaters and had to look away several times. Relentless wide shots of shooting, maiming, and killing during the last half, and numerous close-ups of nasty injuries being treated.

Coarse Language: Occasional, relatively mild language. No f-bombs.

Desmond Doss: With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don't seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.

Tons of quotes in IMDb already but this one:
I've done everything they asked me, except this one thing, and I'm being treated like a criminal just 'cause I won't kill.
-You tried. Nobody can say you didn't. But who are you going to save in prison?
Probably nobody.
-Then why can't you just pick up the stupid gun and wave it around? You don't have to use it, just meet them halfway.
-I can't do that.
Yes, you can. It's just pride. Pride and stubbornness. Don't confuse your will with the Lord's.
-Have I been prideful?
Maybe I am prideful. But I don't know how I'm going to live with myself if I don't stay true to what I believe. Much less how you could live with me. I'd never be the man that I want to be in your eyes.
-I fell in love with you because you weren't like anyone else and you didn't try to be. Do not think for one moment that you will disappoint me. I will love you no matter what.
