Vernon God Little

A 21st Century Comedy in the Presence of Death

Book - 2011
Average Rating:
Rate this:
Vernon Gregory Little has secrets, but none of them - or so he assumes - have anything to do with the recent massacre of 16 students at his high school. This novel depicts simple humanity in a complex world and poses questions about culpability and priorities in a hypocritical, media-saturated world.

This is by far the worst book I've read all year. It's incoherent, stupid, and ugly. D.B.C. ("dirty but clean" wtf?) Pierre no doubt thinks he's beeing very edgy and topical by dealing with school shootings, underage lust, and the media circus. His supposedly satiric version of America (he's Australian) is so grotesque and ludicrously overwrought as to be unrecognizable. What's more picking small town Texas idiots to make fun of isn't exactly edgy. Pierre seems to have absorbed his version of America via bad cable TV, video games, and trashy check out line magazines. Though supposedly comic, it's about as funny as a pencil stabbed into your ankle and broken off. And this won the Booker Prize (putting Pierre alongside Salman Rushdie & A.S. Byatt), which shows that just maybe some people in Britain want to see America as this horrible, violent, and senseless fun house. This is not me being provincial; there is much about our culture that is ripe for satire, but not by somebody who knows nothing about it or about writing. Man this book sucked so much. PS: A fun game to play when you get bored is spot the obscenity on every page.

this book was VERY funny and a page turner as well. I thought the dialouge between the characters was great, and the plotline was superb! Vernon God Little is one of the best books of 2003 by far. I would highly recommend it to anybody looking for a great book to read. Also, its fairly short, and it reads fast, so you can probably finish in a fairly fast timeframe. Check it out at your local public library today!

I loved this book! It does play into our current fascination with school shootings and mass killings, but what I really appreciated was the subtle growth and maturing process of the narrator. At the novel's beginning, he is crass, self-centred and judgemental, an average unhappy teenager with below average status. The persecution he endures throughout the book somehow brings him out of himself and draws him toward compassion and gentleness. Really well written and compelling.

Excellent read. Good insights and comic relief. Enjoyed the uniqueness of Pierre's voice.

"It's hot as hell in Martirio, but the papers on the porch are icy with the news."
