Okay, show of hands - who likes cake? With almost all precincts reporting, we can safely say that nearly everyone likes cake. And, why not? As a sugar delivery system comfort food, cake is hard to beat. Well, for those that have an interest in the history of food, Alysa Levene has written a fine cake biography entitled, “Cake : A Slice of History”. This could have been a very different kind of book, because let’s face it, a book about the history of cake sounds, well, frivolous. But, Levene never treats her subject as frivolous. She did her research and presented the material, just as any historian would. She did this without over-emphasizing the importance of cake, nor did she trivialize it. Doing serious work about the not-so-serious, is not an easy task. Levene’s success in threading that literary needle could lead one to say that she was able to have her cake, and eat it, too. If one were so inclined.
