A Royal Affair is the true story of an ordinary man who wins the queen's heart and starts a revolution. Centering on the intriguing love triangle between the ever more insane Danish King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe F?lsgaard), the royal physician (and man of enlightenment and idealism) Johann Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen), and the young but strong Queen Caroline Mathilde (Alicia Vikander), A Royal Affair is the gripping tale of brave idealists who risk everything in the pursuit of freedom for their people, and of the passionate and forbidden romance that changed an entire nation.

watched it twice; nicely done historic portrait of changes in Denmark in the 1700's. All the actors did a stellar job in recalling the events of those days. I wish they would have expounded on the latter part of the movie when the next generation takes over. A must.
Thanks to the library for featuring it on the DVD's showcase in the recommended page.

Enjoyed a part of history I knew nothing about - now I understand how/when Denmark started 'liberal' attitudes. Good to great acting by all. English often spoken, but I still relied on subtitles despite them not lasting long enough on screen for me. Makes me want to visit the countryside.

Something WAS rotten in Denmark! Great costumes, fine acting.

Royals are, much to our surprise, really human. And this story based on real events captures the conflict between duty and love with nuanced acting and terrific photography. The pace is steady and leads to the ending which is satisfying from an artistic perspective and tragic from the personal perspective.

The Danes and Dutch have made some outstanding films and you shouldn't let the subtitles shy you away. There's some real gems, and this film is one of them.

I loved this movie, subtitles and all. It was the first foreign film that I've seen in a while. Before long, you don't even realize you're reading! Great acting coupled with a memorable story, It stayed with me for days afterwards.
