In a society that greed, lust and individualism is motivated and encouraged continuously, seeing a movie which has no sex scene and no violence could be disappointing for the majority of the people. That's why you see 2 or 1 star ratings. However it's a true story about a determined man who finally reaches his goal while a mentally sick person puts an end to his life. The acting, direction and scenario is all great. At the same time it could be saddening for many

This movie starts out slow, but stay with it. Worlds collide when two wrestling brothers (played by Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo) , both of whom had won Olympic gold medals, enter the world of John Du Pont (played by Steve Carrell). Mr. Du Pont is a self-styled Ornithologist, Philatelist and Wrestling Coach. As the heir to the Du Pont fortune, he has created a wrestling training facility on his huge bucolic estate. His mother (played by Vanessa Redgrave) disapproves of the "low sport" preferring equestrian sports like fox hunting. Psychological instability abounds starting with the relationship between son and mother as Du Pont tries to please her while his distaste for horses is clear. Meanwhile, Mark Schultz (Tatum) only has his former glory to sustain him as he trains for future gold. Dave Schultz is his older brother who lives a happy life as teacher, husband and father. The brothers are close and train together. Du Pont finds his way into Mark's life and creates a codependent existence when he sets up Mark with a home and training on the estate. Tensions abound and Mark is caught in the middle. Both Du Pont and Dave have a hold on Mark. Dave is a loving brother, but does he have too much control over Mark's life? And now there is Du Pont who is with Mark constantly. It is never explicitly shown or said, but given how Mark acts out, one is given to wonder if a sexual relationship develops between Mark and Du Pont. Du Pont lures Dave and family to the estate so that Dave can help prepare wrestlers for the upcoming competition. However, tensions are just made greater. All actors escape into their roles and the viewer of the film forgets they are watching some of the biggest names in the biz. Get prepared for a dark, but fascinating story that is apparently all true except that I have read that the real-life Mark objected to the suggestion of a homosexual relationship between himself and Du Pont.

This is exceptionally dark. Not much action, no special effects, BUT exceedingly well acted. You won't even recognize Steve Carell in this...he is so exceptional.

Excellent movie!

One of the earlier comments was about "something to learn and feel" message missing from the movie: How about "Let's make America great" coming from the psychopathic moneybag? The terrible power of money separating people from reality and reason, allowing them to go to the end of their insanity without anybody being able to stop them. The temptation of being more financially secure which corrupts everybody whose livelihood depends on that wealth - the security, the advisors, and the brothers themselves.

The book and the movie is a warning - and that's what everybody should think about and learn from.

How can one not give a true story full marks? The characters are so morose. I just didn't get it. Shouldn't they be having the time of their lives? Why the misery? I knew someone was going to get killed. How did I ever miss this story when it happened? What a terrible event! The film has left me with a feeling of loss that is going to simmer in me for the next few days. I'm glad I saw it. My condolences to those who had to live through this.

John du Pont: I consider you a friend. And my friends call me Eagle. Or Golden Eagle. Either of those would work. Or John. Or Coach.

Mark: I'm so proud to introduce my mentor. He has the ability to look at me and see where I am in life. I feel his love for me as an athlete
and as a human being. My mother and father were divorced when I was 2. And I spent a lifetime looking for a father, and I found one in the Golden Eagle of America, John du Pont.

John du Pont: Mark, we as a nation have failed to honor you. And that's a problem. Not just for you, but for our society. When we fail to honor that which should be honored, it's a problem. It's a canary in a coal mine.
