Thanksgiving 1973. The climate is changing, both politically and physically. As the Watergate scandal unfolds in the background, the inhabitants of a small Connecticut town begin to slip into an existentialist void. Social taboos are shattered on whims and the line between adult authority and juvenile irresponsibility is practically nonexistant. Focuses on the Hood and Carver families. Chronicles a brief period of rapid moral deterioration. Their actions - including adultery, sexual experimentation, drug use and petty crimes - become increasingly unpredictable and impulsive. Once the 'ice storm' hits, though, reality sinks in, and the severity of their situation becomes all too apparent.

THIS WAS 1973, EVERYBODY, A YEAR EVERYONE WISHED TO FORGET. IF YOU LIKE THIS ONE, TRY BOBANDCAROL AND TEDANDALICE (but that was 1968,and encounter groups). sIMILAR, TO A POINT. aNG LEE WENT ON TO DIRECT THE EXCELLENT LUST, CAUTION; HULK; BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. HE BEGAN WITH SENSE AND SENSIBILITY. MANY DISBELIEVED A CHINESE COULD BE SO SUBTLE. HE COULD, AND HE DID. HE IS ACTUALLY MORE WELL KNOWN AS AN ACTION FILM DIRECTOR. THIS IS A CRITERION DVD EDITION. THIS MEANS THE SECOND DISC HAS EXCELLENT DEPTH FEATURES. IF YOU ARE A STUDENT OF HOW FILMS ARE MADE, CHECK that disk OUT. This film does not make my top 15 list, but LUST, CAUTION does. See Jamey Sheridan before he joined LAW AND ORDER, CRIMINAL INTENT as the major case squad Captain. During the interview onstage at a film festival where Lee and his writer/producer were interviewed, he kept saying he was scared to take on all the projects that the interviewer mentioned. I wondered if he had ever encountered an English thesaurus. It came off a little phoney for some reason. Ah well, he trained as an actor, at such and such a school. To remain this limited with his English though, seems affected. If Polanski tried it, he'd be booed out of the theatre.

If you hate everyone, if you look down on everyone, and if you're either neurotic or severely depressed, you might like this movie.

This is the most disgusting movie I've ever seen.

The rare instance where the film is better than the book. Perfectly captures and dissects the post-60s, post-Watergate malaise and dead end debauchery of the suburbs. This is what "American Beauty" wanted to be.

The movie had lots of potential, but it goes nowhere. On top of it all, it throws in a piece of tragedy that has nothing to do with anything.

In times when writers were not free to explore sexuality, they used to kill the heroine in the end - you know, to show that god punishes these things. This movie seems to follow the same twisted logic, while not being brave enough to state it clearly. Yuck.

Great cast and directing.

Wendy & Paul Hood (Christina Ricci, Tobey MacGuire) keep calling each other "Charles". Evidently, this is supposed to be an in-joke about '70s TV personality Charles Nelson Reilly, though the parents are supposed to think they mean Charles Manson.

It was like being a bystander to sexual perverseness of every age, from pre-teens to seasoned forty and fifty-somethings. You watch the corruption and are appalled. If this was what the 70's was like for this segment of society, I can only hope they looked outward beyond themselves for the humanity they so desperately needed. I would not watch it again.

A bit slow-paced (Ang Lee directs, so is it any surprise? He's the master of monotony though it always LOOKS gorgeous.) but a well-acted drama with a great cast of veterans and soon-to-be-stars. Of the veterans, Kevin Kline and especially Joan Allen bring an innate melancholy and aggression to their characters' crumbling marriage. I was especially taken with Christina Ricci's performance in the film, proving herself a force of nature as a rebellious teenage daughter exploring her sexuality. The rambling existential nature of the story perhaps echos the atmosphere of the early 70s when the radical 60s gave way to a world without rules. If you're looking for a definitive conclusion, don't bother; the film's final scene is just as open-ended as the decade itself. Solid, beautifully shot movie.
