The Belgariad is an epic fantasy of immense scope, telling the tale of struggles between ancient Gods and mighty Kings, and of men in strange lands facing fated events, all bound by a prophecy that must be fulfilled. Long ago, so the Storyteller claimed, the evil God Torak sought dominion and drove men and Gods to war. But Belgrath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe.

"Pawn of Prophecy" (Book 1 of the Belgariad) is Eddings' first foray into High Fantasy, and it's easy to see that Tolkien's works have been a major inspiration. The writing does improve over the span of the five books, and by the end you will find yourself wanting more. The audio version is a real treat. Cameron Beierle's narration really makes the story come alive, as he has a different voice (and depending on nation, accent) for every character.

I love this book and the complete series. The Belgariad and The Mallorean that follows.
I have reread and reread just for the fun of the adventure, the character interactions and as another commenter said the sarcasm. If you just want a fun, esacapism type of book/series, this would be one of those to read.
