This volume collects work by Associated Press staff photographers documenting the invasion and occupation of Iraq. In spite of the fact that they were available from the Associated Press, many of the photographs never made it into the mainstream American newspapers, perhaps because editors perceived their subject matter as too "sensitive," depicting as they do such subjects as an Iraqi detainee hooded and comforting his four-year-old son behind barbed wire, innocent victims of US military operations, scenes of carnage from Sunni insurgent bombs, morgues full of victims of Shia death squads connected to the US-installed government, and other disturbing scenes in addition to more comforting images, such as purple-fingered voters, that did make it to American audiences. The work of 39 photographers is represented. Journalist Chris Hedges, author of War Is a Force that Gives Us Meaning, provides the introduction, a meditation on the failure that is war in general and the Iraq War in particular. Risking their lives, intrepid journalists and photographers have labored in often desperate conditions to bring images of war-torn Iraq to the rest of the world. Since no war in US history has had more carefully managed press coverage than this one, their more controversial and moving efforts have gone largely unreported in the US. Here are the pictures Americans have not seen: An Iraqi boy trying to study with a bandaged eye; the bullet-riddled tail of a Red Crescent vehicle; American soldiers and Iraqi citizens alike praying; mass graves, brothers kneeling over dead brothers. Each picture suggests the world and lives beyond the edges of the frame; together they begin to show the true face of the US occupation of Iraq.
