I don't read a lot of mysteries, but having watched a couple of episodes of the BBC Shetland show (which is based on Ann Cleeves' novels), I thought this might be something to try. The almost note-for-note similarity to the plot of the episodes I watched didn't give me a great impression. I also wasn't a huge fan of the scattered narrators that existed solely to keep bits of plot from the reader. Nothing terrible, but nothing that felt very unique. The setting was the main thing keeping it from being a James Patterson novel.

The first book of the series which the BBC show Shetland is based. Very atmospheric and captured life in the Shetlands. The mystery was less dark than those that followed.

Hm. I didn't like this book as much as others did. I guess there were two reasons: 1) I figured out who the killer was immediately. That never happens with me! Never. However, I found it to be pretty obvious. 2) I found many of the phrases and words to be unfamiliar, which made it difficult to figure what was going on. This was not a problem with what the author had written, however, but my own problem of not knowing the meaning of certain words and phrases that are used in Scotland. When I read the next book, I'll make note of the things I've never heard of and look them up! The only thing I was able to figure out on my own was that sledge was a sled. How sad is that, snort?

On the positive side, I loved Jimmy Perez. On the negative side, it seemed like all of the other characters were doing things that were illogical. Like I said, I do plan on giving the next book a try, though.

the first in Ann Cleeves "Shetland Series", which currently numbers 8, introduces the self-contained, reflective protagonist Inspector Jimmy Perez, and residents of the cold, isolated Shetland town, Lerwick. Tears after the unsolved disappearance of a young girl; town residents are again stricken with the death of a teen whose body is found by the circling of ravens overhead. What follows is a pace-quickening journey exposing the inner-most secrets of the community to a surprising (for me, anyway) conclusion. A real page-turner from an author who doesn't show her hand until end game.

When the body of a teenage girl is discovered near the village freak, it seems the crime is solved before the investigation begins. Shetland native and policeman Jimmy Perez soon discovers there is more than meets the eye. Fast-paced and gritty, and with an excellent sense of place. First in the Shetland Mystery series.
