An overview of the ancient world offers detailed timelines, an analysis of cultural interconnections, profiles of key figures, and a study of literary, artistic, cultural, political, economic, and social institutions.

Norton Pub
A lively and engaging narrative history showing the common threads in the cultures that gave birth to our own.
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history.Dozens of maps provide a clear geography of great events, while timelines give the reader an ongoing sense of the passage of years and cultural interconnection. This old-fashioned narrative history employs the methods of “history from beneath”—literature, epic traditions, private letters and accounts—to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled. The result is an engrossing tapestry of human behavior from which we may draw conclusions about the direction of world events and the causes behind them.

Book News
Bauer (College of William and Mary, Virginia) embarks on a traditional narrative history of the world beginning here with the earliest written accounts in Mesopotamia and progressing through the third century AD. Though she devotes a chapter here and there to India, China, and western and northern Europe, this part of her story centers on the Mediterranean. There is no indication how many volumes are planned in the series. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

I'm only a history nerd when the information is presented in an interesting and engaging way. Susan Wise Bauer has a way of writing about history that never bogs down in minute, boring details even though she covers a lot of ground in this volume (followed by two other books at this time.) She moves from one area of the world to another, giving us the biggest hits and what we need to know at each stop before moving on. Reading these books are a great way of reframing and relearning history that you may have missed in those college Ancient Civ classses you crammed for.
