In a remote area of Northern Kenya, activist Tessa Quayle is found brutally murdered. Tessa's companion, a doctor, appears to have fled the scene, and all the evidence points to a crime of passion. Members of the British High Commission in Nairobi assume that Tessa's widower, their mild-mannered and unambitious colleague Justin Quayle, will leave the matter to them. Haunted by remorse and jarred by rumors of his late wife's infidelities, Quayle surprises everyone by embarking on a personal odyssey that will take him across three continents. Using his privileged access to diplomatic secrets, Justin risks his own life and will stop at nothing to expose the truth - a conspiracy more far-reaching and deadly than Quayle could ever have imagined.

Sir Bernard Pellegrin: Do you no good to go poking around under rocks, Justin. Some very nasty things live under rocks, especially in foreign gardens.

Just a little too weird for my taste.
A good but not great film. It could have been much better.
The first time I saw it, I thought the movie slow and boring and almost turned it off, but it picked up pace in the end. The second time I saw it, what I really saw was an intense love story. At first, the wife looked like she was just using Justin to get to Africa and fight the big pharmaceutical companies. However, as you watch Justin fill in the blanks in her story, you see things in a completely different light.
I liked the scenery at the end with the flamingos and curlews calling in the distance.
Old production. Not entertaining enough.
Amazing movie--and sad to see that 10 years after this movie was made Big Pharma is still ascendant and making money off of poor, sick people. Suspenseful, well-acted, and moving.
Overly long and politicized movie who's main message seems to be Africans good and Westerners bad. A simple minded movie where everything is black or white, good or bad with nothing in between or any shades of grey allowed. Skip this movie or just watch the last 20 minutes where the only action in the movie worth watching is anyway.
I couldn't believe the bond between British diplomat Justin and his murdered wife Tessa was that strong. They were not made for each other to begin with. Tessa seems an immature, self-centered, self-righeous person. Too many charactors involved, and the storyline too complicated. Excellent performance by Ralph Fiennes.
While it says something important, it does not fully entertain.
Overall, “The Constant Gardener” was a good story. However, I found the element of self-sacrificing love a bit overdone and unbelievable.
