When a series of apparent miracles breaks out in the idyllic city of Urbino, Italy, the birthplace of Raphael, restoration begins on one of the famed artist's enigmatic paintings in the hopes of locating a secret clue, a situation that prompts a shocking act of violence by a modern-day speech-disabled woman.

Charlotte Penton lives for the truth beneath the surface of ancient paintings covered by time, clumsy restorations, and polite revisions. In Urbino, Italy, she's come to the ancestral home of Raphael to restore his classic La Muta, "The Silent Woman." With their country steeped in scandal and corruption, the inhabitants of Urbino are more concerned with the inexplicable miracles that begin to occur after a living mute violently attacks her counterpart in Raphael's famous painting.
As pilgrims crowd the streets, the Vatican investigates and television crews flood the ancient Italian town. Unwillingly forced into the center of the controversy, Charlotte grows dangerously close to the ice-cream maker Francesco Procopio, a man overly familiar with those involved in covering up Italy's shocking past.
What secret concealed in the enigmatic La Muta could literally wake up Raphael? What buried passions will Charlotte's pursuit of the truth bring to the surface? And most important, what could be revealed by Charlotte that is so unspeakable, it has bound an entire community in a conspiracy of silence?

almost a magical book the way the author slowly reveals the story while weaving a beautiful picture of where the story takes place. The reader will feel like they are there as she takes you on a magical ride.
