I was very disappointed with this book. Dea Birkett's introduction was interesting she describes how she goes to the place described in one of the journals of her Victorian Lady Explorers and how while some things had changed other things were just as they were a hundred years ago. This gave me the impression that the whole book would be about her retracing the steps of the Victorian Lady Explores to the extent that is possible and making many references to the lady's journals. She has several ladies she is talking about and I thought she would be retracing journeys of each lady one at time.
After the introduction however the book becomes weighted down with details of her psychological examinations of the motivations of each lady constantly comparing one with the other to the point where you cannot keep track of which lady she is talking about and deep discourse of how they were early feminist etc.
If you just want to read some good travel stories of earlier times this is not the book for you.
However; the photographs in the book really are quite amazing the book is well worth checking out just to see them.
