*Spoilers* It's been a while since I've read such a powerful story. Strong themes of racism, racial and gender identity, trauma and family. It wasn't longer than it needed to be. I had hoped the ending would see Stella at her mother's…

I ended up liking it but I had to deduct points for the non-chronological story-telling. It took me half the book to finally get into it and I almost stopped reading it. I am glad I finished it though because it was interesting and…

CONTAINS SPOILERS This book evoked a lot of emotions for me. I enjoyed it overall but would have wished there was more character building. I also felt since the book was so dense with a lot of important themes such as: - Colourism - Race…

This is a book that feels like family. Queerness, transness, Blackness- all of it is presented in a way that you intrinsically understand and identify with. Even if you're someone who holds grudges for decades, you instantly understand why…

I think this book has a great foundation with the story and the characters. However, it didn’t feel like the characters were fully developed throughout the story. The writing also felt choppy at times. It was an ok read.

Compelling read. Interesting characters and life situations. Thoughtful and provoking. A little disappointed in the ending, but still a good read.

There was no connection for me as it was a choppy written novel. I attempted twice as it was part of a book club but it did not improve my desire to complete it.

I wasn't drawn into this story. It dangled unknowns in front of you, but for me, I didn't build enough connection to the characters and the writing was not compelling, deep and descriptive enough to keep me going. I didn't finish this book.

Bennett's compelling novel chronicles the lives of twin sisters whose choices at 16 sever their close relationship and change the course of their lives. As Bennett compassionately tells their stories, she tackles the idea of the hidden…

I loved the plot of this book, the intertwining connectedness of the characters, and the subtle way in which diversity of race and gender is portrayed over the period of time between 1968 and the mid 1980s. I suspect it would evoke great…

A brilliant complicated book. Lots of non-endings at the end....perhaps better left that way.

This was a good read, but I don't like it when books actually make me think too much. Give me all the dumb books that don't have a ton of substance behind them and that don't make me question the world. If I'd read this for school I…

There was a lot to digest in this book. It's a fascinating story and one that kept me turning the pages. But, it also left me wanting more. Specifically, I wanted to know more about Stella's motivation to live a lie which, at the end of…

The first 100 pages were magnificent. Sadly it became overwrought with heavy-handed and somewhat cliched emotional machinations.

It was SO slow for the first half, I almost gave up multiple times. I really enjoyed the plot and the characters, though. We never really figured it out though, like they never really told us why the one twin left and told no one. Idk it…
