This May, celebrate AANHPI Heritage with the Palo Alto City Library! Join us for a performance by Kulintang Dialect, followed by a workshop for participants to learn more about Filipino culture and kulintang.
Kulintang is pre-colonial, indigenous Filipino folk music. Kulintang Dialect performs the traditional kulintang music passed down by the late Master Danongan Kalanduyan with fidelity. The band also explores the joyous and courageous ways this music can express itself that are nourished by its specific context on this American soil, by playing original compositions composed by Conrad Benedicto.
Conrad is a teacher, author, and kulintang musician. He teaches social studies, environmental education, and kulintang music at Balboa High School in San Francisco. In 2018, Conrad received an individual artist grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission to compose original kulintang music for his project called, “Kulintang Dialect.”
