Description

Brazil in the 21st century faces an alarming political divide. In this context, it is not uncommon for people with divergent ideologies to be treated as threatening enemies, paving the way for intolerance across different spheres of society. The documentary Faith and Fury invites us to reflect on how this division also manifests in the religious sphere. This investigative movie exposes the recent alliance between drug trafficking factions and certain branches of Evangelical Neo-Pentecostalism, as well as their resulting attacks on Afro-Brazilian religions. Through the analysis of a specific case, the film presents historical elements that encourage a broader reflection on intolerance, considering its social, racial, and cultural implications. This 103-minute documentary is rated PG-13 and includes thematic content involving drug trafficking, intense emotional testimonials, and strong language.

This documentary explores religious conflicts in the slums and suburbs of Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, shedding light on the growing conservative wave sweeping across Brazil. The rapid expansion of evangelical churches, along with the ties some have formed with local drug gangs, has disrupted the balance of religious influence, leading to increasing cases of intolerance. These tensions not only affect worship practices but also reshape territorial boundaries and community dynamics. Faith and Fury offers an in-depth look at the role of “evangelical drug dealers,” exposing the intricate links between religion and power on the outskirts of Brazil’s major cities.
